(Note, I'm not sponsored or anything (I wish) by any of these and I only recommend tools I use myself (or are noteworthy/previously used). I'll also try to only recommend free tools unless something is insanely cheap and/or worth the money).
⭘
Kilohearts Essentials. One of the easiest sets of effects ever, super useful and can easily replace your DAWs stock effects if need be.
⭘
Vital Synth Hands down one of, if not, the best free synths out there; has additional tiers; the tiers get you more wavetables and presets, so not overly needed but definitely worth it if you want to support the dev.
⭘
Kerovee. An easy auto-tune/pitch correction vst. Gives a different character than other freeware tools of its nature.
⭘
All of Voxengo's free offerings. Especially
SPAN and
Correlometer which I use for mixing and mastering all the time.
⭘
GVST's offerings. I use, mainly
GGate as it's a simple enough gate and
GTune to see if my songs are in key.
⭘
Missortion. A great distortion to use on kick drums.
⭘
Geonkick. I don't really use this that much , I tend to use samples and then pass them through loads of distortion; however, a proper free drum synth nevertheless!
⭘
ArX. A super useful tool to fix mono-compatibility in your mixes. I use this on pretty much every mix (oops).
⭘
ValhallaSupermassive. A good one-stop shop for reverbs, delays and general atmospheric noises. Presets are great by themselves and a more than enough of a reason to add it to your arsenal.
⭘
Halley Labs/Comet's Tail Toybox plugins. A collection of cool and unique plugins made by the mind behind Lapfox Trax, Emma Essex.
⭘
LinuxDAW.org. Is a great resource to find plugins that run natively on Linux; the majority of what you will find here will also, usually, have Windows versions too. Also check out...
⭘
Linux Audio Development (LAD)/linuxaudio.dev, which serves as a general information/updates-ish page for plugin developers/resources that support Linux.
Other than that, I use FL Studio (latest version) to make my music. I might add all the paid plugins I use at some point; but I feel that promoting free tools is a better way to get more people into music production.
⭘If you did want a free DAW though, I used to use
LMMS. The transition to FL Studio was pretty smooth.
⭘Alternatively, I have started to learn
Tracktion Waveform. It offers (and has a fully-featured free version) a slightly different workflow to FL, but with the MIDI Producer expansion (or Waveform Pro), I find that the piano roll is seriously good. The effects could be better though (I like the graphical eq, however). It also runs natively on Linux!
